In a smaller room, a trundle bed can be a good choice. "The child will have the extra floor space, but you can pull it out for a sleepover."

Built-ins can be customized to fit varied spaces. "You should have shelves to display toys and awards," Kubli says. "A window seat is a place to sit and read, and has storage underneath. Custom hardware can individualize it even more."

"Use washable, durable paints," Kubli says. "Nontoxic paints with low VOCs have come a long way in the last few years. They're good from an allergy standpoint, and good for the environment."

Will the room have wall-to-wall carpet? "It should have a smooth surface so the wheels of toys will roll on it," Kubli says. If possible, leave open space. "Children are always on the floor playing," Kubli points out. continued
