Don't forget the ceiling. "Children love to lie on their beds and daydream," Kubli says. "Put medallions around the light fixture or fan, or hand paint something to incorporate with the room's theme. Or just get some stickers."

Light is important, but so is the ability to produce darkness. "Children need to be able to take naps," Kubli says. "Shutters or blackout shades make it possible to control the light."

For curtains and other fabrics in the room, Kubli prefers natural materials like cotton. "They're easier to clean," she says. "And they take pigments nicely, so you can get bright colors." >>>
